ROHAN has been in the field of book publishing for more than
twenty five years.

One of the founders of Rohan Prakashan, Manohar Champanerkar was
a teacher by profession at Mumbai and has to his credit over150
educational books, which he had written during his teaching career.
His son and another founder, Pradeep Champanerkar had completed his
education from the J.J. School of Arts, Mumbai, The two then decided to
set up Rohan Prakashan, a publishing house in 1982.

The duo realized that not much dent had been made in the realm of
Marathi publication as most of the focus of those in the trade was only
on literature publishing. Also, not many in the field were taking note of
changing lifestyles, tastes and values of the Marathi middle and higher
middle class in urban and mofussil areas. These changes in tastes, patterns and preferences of the emerging urban-scape remained unattended. The
publisher partners read the prognosis and emerging trends and took the
initial steps to meet these changing needs.

They explored and ventured along a new path. They started with utility
books, which were very well received. In a short span they had created
a niche and had made their mark. Books like ‘Chinglan’ relating to
Chinese Cookery, ‘Sabhet Kase Bolave’ a guide to developing oratorical
skills and ‘Palakanshi Hitagoos’ which provided useful tips to child
development were extremely well received by the readers. Thanks to the
overwhelming response that these publications received, ROHAN
managed to identify and create for itself a reliable, responsive and
reflective set of committed readers. This section of readers was happy
with the assured quality of production as well as the contents thereof.
In early nineties ROHAN spread its wings and widened its scope by
bringing in its ambit publications of biographical books and books relating to history and politics. Among the initial attempts was ‘Lalbahadur Shastri’ penned by senior IPS officer C.P. Srivastav (translated by Ashok Jain), which was released at the hands of the then Governor P.C. Alexander. This book was a noteworthy landmark in the life of the publishing house as it made a considerable impact and was well appreciated by the readers.

Despite broadening its scope subject-wise, ROHAN has left no stone
unturned to achieve and maintain consistent and conscious efforts to
excel in quality of production. ‘Pahoonchar’, published in 1995, proved
to be a landmark book in this regard. While setting standards, it became a bench-mark for in terms of - font selection, layouts, use of white space,
structured content, use of quality photographs and sketches, quality of
paper, cover etc. In short it became a touchstone in every respect thanks to the richness to the publication. There has been no looking back since
then. Superior quality of production has become the hallmark of ROHAN
publication and over 250 books touching upon several subjects (like
Biography, History, Politics, Social studies, Education, Arts, Theatre,
Culture, Health & Medicine, Naturopathy, Yoga, Literature, Humour,
Literature for Children, Craft Art & Skills, Sports, Adventure and
Communication, Cookery) are testimony to this unbeatable, proud
distinguishing feature of ROHAN publishing.

While continuing to operate from its Mumbai office, ROHAN shifted its
Head Office to Pune, long considered to be a bastion of Marathi
Publication. By then ROHAN had formed an enviable association with
high quality writers. Apart from the production, ROHAN has a battery
of fine editors to ensure structured and skilful presentation of the writing
of talented authors. The efforts are reflected in the publications. ROHAN
has received several national and state level awards for excellence in book production. It is no surprise that since the last decade ROHAN has been
considered to be a name to reckon with in the field of elite publishing.

With the success of its research based voluminous book ‘Yanee Ghadvale
Sahasrak’ (They Shaped the Millennium), which proved to be the first
of its kind in the history of Marathi publication, ROHAN reached the high
point of its journey. The book not only got an overwhelming response
from Marathi readers but it also received national level of recognition
(refer list several awards it received).

At the turn of this century, the English division of ROHAN, ‘Rohan
Books’ was set up. With the publication ‘Fast Forward’ a milestone
book by Sharad Pawar, ROHAN BOOKS made a fine debut in the
stream of English publication. The book was released at the hands
of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at his
residence at New Delhi, in July 2008.

While ROHAN thus far has reached some significant peaks during the
last three decades, no efforts have been spared to maintain its stature,
standards and attempt scaling of new heights!!

This however could not have ever been possible without the unflinching
support of all Marathi readers.
